FRANCE, Provincial. Lorraine, Duchy. Charles III le Grand, Duke, 1545-1608. Taler (Silver, 41 mm, 28.91 g, 3 h), Nancy, 1557. ☩CAROL:D:G:CALA:LOTHO:BARGVEL:DVX Bareheaded and cuirassed bust of the youthful, fourteen-year-old, Duke Charles to right. Rev. Crowned shield bearing the arms of Lorraine, surrounded by seven crowned shields bearing the arms of Jerusalem, Aragon, Blamont, Gelders and Flanders, Flanders, Hungary and Naples; at the bottom, 15-57. Dav. 9384. De Saulcy 10. Flon 36. Very rare. Toned and particularly attractive. Traces of restriking on the obverse and signs of careful repairs on the Duke's cheek, otherwise, extremely fine.

Ex MDC Monnaies de Collection 3, 1 December 2017, 1176.

The smoothed area on the cheek seems to have been done long ago, probably by an early collector who wished to efface distracting traces of overstriking.
