Whilst on the reverse, the jug and the lituus are symbols of the pontificate, and refer to the election of Publius Cornelius Lentulus to the college of augurs in 57 BC, the obverse of this coin shows an axe, a simpulum and a knife, which indicates Brutus' membership of the college of pontiffs since 48 BC. By insisting on their membership to these major priestly colleges, Lentulus and Brutus implied that their cause had divine support.
