SASANIAN KINGS; Varahran II. 276-293 AD. Gold Dinar (7.64 gm; 19 mm). Crowned and cuirassed bust right / \"Fire of Bahram"\" in Pahlavi (partially degraded), fire altar with attendants; three pellets on central column, fravahr symbol (wreath) and taurus symbol flanking flames. Paruck 115; Alram 715; MACW -; De Morgan pg. 671, 44 (pl. XLIX, 10); Sellwood 20; Gobl 48. Choice EF. RRR. A very important specimen from a known die. We strongly believe that the interesting heptagonal shape was caused because the original coin was struck from a correct die-pair using a wrong flan. The latter must have been prepared for a double dinar, probably weighing about 15-16 grams. However, having struck the coin, the moneyer detected his error. Rather than consigning it to the melting pot to be re-cast as fresh flans with correct weights, he resorted to clipping the coin around the edge to adjust its weight to that of a normal dinar. Although the resulting flan has a heptagonal shape, it nevertheless has the correct weight of a full gold dinar. Its thickness also indicates that the intact flan was much heavier than 7.68 grams, probably twice as much. It also strongly suggests that the gold issue included very rare double dinars, yet to be discovered. A numismatically outstanding piece."
