SURVEYOR'S POCKET ALTIMETER, aneroid barometer type, half Hunter pocket watch style case hallmarked for silver, white dial marked, 'Compensated/No 1784/Kilpatrick & Co, Melbourne', case and altimeter made in England, black numerals and other markings and indicator hand, range goes up to 5,000 feet, with suspension loop at top, case made in London in 1912 by ATO (Albert Thomas Oliver), there are also hallmarks on either side of the bow swivel which reads made in 1907 by CH (probably Charles Hill), in a fitted carry case in leather and inside lined with velvet and silk, under lid marked in gold print for 'Stanley, 286 High Holborn, London W.C.1'. Scratch at top centre of dial and missing reset button, otherwise good fine.

This instrument measures elevation by sensing minute changes in barometric air pressure relative to a fixed datum point at sea level or a known elevation point. It has an accuracy range of +/- 20 feet in experienced hands. The word 'Compensated' on the dial indicates that the instrument has been constructed to compensate for the effect of temperature changes on the accuracy of the readings.
