QUEEN'S SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL 1899, (type 3 reverse), - five clasps - Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902. 2040 Tpr: C.E.Drake. S.A. Lt Horse. Impressed. Hairlines, otherwise very fine.

Information from the book titled Steinaecker's Horsemen by William (Bill) Woolmore, p181, 'Drake, Charles Earle, Trooper (Sp.Sq.): Born in the USA in 1877. Served previously as Trooper Np.2040 in the South African Light Horse (15 months). Enlisted in SH (Steinaecker's Horse) at PMB (Pietermaritzburg) on 25 February 1902 - age 24, no occupation given, height 5'9 3 /4", dark eyes, grey hair, no marks. NOK: father, Bushnall, Illinois, USA. Discharged at his own request on 15 May 1902 after less than 3 months. No explanation found. He qualified for the QSA medal with clasps Cape Colony, OFS, Transvaal, SA 1901 & SA 1902. On 10 May 1907 the medal and clasps were sent to him at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, USA.'
