NEW ZEALAND MEDAL 1869, (1863 to 1866 reverse). 198. Buglr. Wm.N.G.Garland. 43rd Lt. Inftry. Impressed. With a piece of ribbon for Victorian Volunteer Long and Efficient Service Medal 1881-1901 attached to medal ribbon, contact marks and edge bump, otherwise good fine.

Together with 2 photos by Rider, supposedly of Garland, the smaller of the two with the details on the back of the laminated board to which the b&w photo is attached which show the name 'Andrew Rider' above an image of an Intercolonial Exhibition Melbourne 1866 prize medal and below, 'Photographic Artist./Williamstown.'

William N.G.Garland, 43rd Regiment Enl.21Jan1859 at Dublin, Centre District as Boy recruit; to Private 24Mar1859; at 43rd Regt Depot at Chatham Apr-Jul1860; Emb.07Jul1860 for India on ship 'Holmsdale'; joined 43rd Regt at Fort St George, Madras 09Oct1860; Appt'd Bugler 28Feb1861; to New Zealand and service in field from 11Dec1863; fought in actions at Gate Pa 29Apr1864, Te Ranga 21Jun1864 and Taranaki District (3 skirmishes); with 43rd Regt at Aldershot Jul-Sep1867; Displaced as Bugler and to Private 10Jul1867; with 43rd Regt in Ireland and promoted to Corporal 18Jun1870; at School of Musketry, Hythe 01Apr-31May1871; to Sergeant 21Apr1872; Col-Sergeant attached to depot of 52nd Light Infantry Jul-Sep1872, and at Malleapooram Jan-Mar1873; Col-Sergeant with 43rd Regt Apr1876-Mar1877; to RSM 19Sep1877; no Muster Rolls available between 1883-1887 but appears to have discharged in this period; according to the late W.Woolmore's research Garland then emigrated to Australia and joined the Victorian Local Forces as a Warrant Officer.
