Diva Faustina I (wife of A. Pius) Æ Sestertius. Rome, AD 141-146. DIVA AVGVSTA FAVSTINA, draped bust to right / PIETAS AVG, the Temple of Antoninus Pius and Faustina: hexastyle temple façade set on two-tiered base; ornate pediment decorated with figures; roof line surmounted by quadriga; figures with billowing veils at ends; SC in exergue. Built by Antoninus Pius after Faustina's death, the temple depicted on this coin was dedicated to her memory. The entablature was inscribed DIVAE FAVSTINAE EX S C, and when eventually Antoninus Pius himself died and was deified 20 years later, the temple was re-dedicated jointly to Antoninus and Faustina at the instigation of his successor, Marcus Aurelius. The additional line DIVO ANTONINVS ET was added above the original inscription that the emperor and empress might be jointly honoured by this edifice. The entablature, which survives to this day, thus reads: "To the divine Antoninus and to the divine Faustina by decree of the Senate." The survival of the temple is attributed to the fact that it was converted into a Roman Catholic church, the Chiesa di San Lorenzo in Miranda, perhaps as early as the seventh century.
