Sex. Pompeius Fostlus AR Denarius. Rome, 137 BC. Helmeted head of Roma to right; behind, jug; X below chin / SEX•PO FOSTLVS, below, ROMA, she-wolf standing to right, head to left, suckling Romulus and Remus; behind, shepherd and birds in a fig tree. Crawford 235/1c; BMCRR Rome 927; RSC Pompeia 1a. 3.91g, 21mm, 12h.

Near Mint State; triple-struck - despite or perhaps because of this, unusually complete for the issue.

From the Andrew McCabe Collection, collector's ticket included;
Privately purchased from London Ancient Coins Ltd.

"I bought this coin because of its complete legend on a large flan - unusual on this type - and its very interesting triple strike. At first look it appears double struck, with on reverse, the wolf's front leg and letter S visible at 12h between the leaves of the Ficus Ruminalis (wild fig tree where Romulus and Remus were found) and on the obverse, triple lines of the visor at 3pm. However the border dots visible obverse 4pm are above a segment of spiked helmet showing between 3pm and 4pm. This is inconsisten with the remnants of the visor triple lines, and proves this was triple struck with two differently located undertypes visible. Very unusual." - Andrew McCabe.
