M. Porcius Cato AR Quinarius. Rome, 89 BC. Head of Liber right, wearing ivy wreath; M•CATO behind, control mark below / Victory seated to right, holding pater and palm branch; VICTRIX in exergue. Crawford 343/2b; RSC Porcia 7; King 46. 2.03g, 15mm, 9h.

Good Very Fine; dark old cabinet tone.

From the Andrew McCabe Collection, collector's ticket included;
Privately purchased from the inventory of S. Bourgey (Paris).

"Both obverse and reverse are engraved in exceptionally fine style, with perfectly centred strikes. Note for example the small fine lettering of VICTRIX, unusual for this type. I bought this from Madame Sabine Bourgey at their elegant old Paris offices on the same visit that I purchased a 1913 provenanced Quadras y Ramon L.ATILI NOM denarius that had plainly been sitting in the Bourgey trays for a century. A coin with a patina style and strike such as this may well come from a very old collection, although it's wear makes it likely it was never plaster cast and illustrated." - Andrew McCabe.
