Tickets and Passes, London and Brighton Railway, Director's Ticket, ivory, legend in four lines, rev. directors ticket around No.6, 35mm, 6.24g (KR 820, this piece). Old surface scratch on obverse, otherwise very fine, extremely rare £150-£200

---

The first part of this line to be built was the Brighton to Shoreham section, at the time a virtually isolated area so all the materials for its construction were brought in by sea. This section opened on 12 May 1840. On 12 July 1841 the line was opened from Norwood Junction to Haywards Heath, and the final section, from Haywards Heath to Brighton, was completed on 21 September 1841. The line from Shoreham to Worthing, which crossed the River Adur by means of a wooden trestle bridge, was opened on 24 November 1845, with the extension from Brighton to Newhaven completed in the summer of 1846. On 27 July 1846 the London and Brighton Railway merged with the London and Croydon Railway to form the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway.
