The British Navy, acting in support of Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI (the 'SOCIORVM' alluded to on the reverse of this medal), attacked the Spanish Navy off the coast of Sicily, which Spanish troops had recently invaded. The British, led by Admiral Sir George Byng, destroyed or captured the majority of the enemy fleet, leaving the Spanish sailors on Sicily completely cut off with no hope of relief.
