Ferdinand I suffered from ill health all of his life, particularly from epileptic fits, and during his reign the kingdom was governed predominantly by his regents. On being informed that the revolutionaries of 1848 were marching on the palace, he is said to have asked, "Are they allowed to do that?". He abdicated in favour of his nephew Franz Joseph following the Revolution and died in Prague.
