Born Désirée Clary, daughter of a wealthy silk merchant, she was first courted by Joseph Bonaparte in 1794, who then married her older sister Julie Clary. She was officially engaged to Napoleon Bonaparte in April 1795, to be replaced by Joséphine de Beauharnais. She then married General Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte on August 17, 1798, in Sceaux. In 1810 he became King Charles XIV of Sweden and Norway and she Queen Desideria.
