When the Liverpool & Manchester Railway opened in September 1830, it crossed Chat Moss, which was surrounded by a number of very boggy areas. For about a year there was an early station at Reid's Farm, but by 1832 it had disappeared. William Reed's methods of draining and fertilising the area of Barton Moss was successful and he was consulted on similar projects elsewhere. In 1833 he was appointed secretary to the Society for the Improvement of Agriculture, Manchester.
