Robert Ranald McIan was a Scottish actor with a reputation for playing Highlanders on the stage and as a painter best known for depictions of Scottish clansmen, their battles and domestic life. His wife Frances (Fanny) was also a noted painter who again favoured the Highlands and Highlanders. She was the first Superintendent of the Female School of Design.
