In 1683 Ahmed Köprülü had captured the fortress of Neuheusel which the Turks retained after the Treaty of Vasvar (1684). In 1685 the Germans led by Charles of Lorraine, the Margrave Louis of Baden, the Elector of Bavaria, Prince Eugene of Savoy and others, succeeded first with the Victory at Gran (August 16th) and then the storming of Neuheusel (August 19th).
