Esme Helen Winthrop (née Smith), Lady Rennie (d. 1952), was the wife of Sir Ernest Amelius Rennie (1868-1935), the British consul in Helsinki. It was he who facilitated a discreet British mission, led by Major-General Walter Mervyn St. George Kirke, that was sent to Finland to advise on coastal and naval defence and establish their Air Force. The mission's success was largely thanks to the efforts of Sir Ernest Rennie.
Finland declared independence on 6 December 1917 and was recognised by the Bolshevik government that seized power in the October Revolution on 31 December 1917.
