The quixotic Maximilian, younger brother of the Emperor Franz Joseph I, was the only Emperor of the Second Mexican Empire for three years before he was executed at Queretaro by a Republican firing squad on 19 June 1867. His statue was removed in 1920 following the collapse of the Austrian Empire and only re-erected in the Piazza Venezia, Trieste, in 1997.
