The column, topped by an angel with the face of Alexander I, is made from a single piece of red granite and was designed by the French-born architect Auguste de Montferrand (1786-1858) and the Swiss-born Antonio Adamini (1792-1846). It was unveiled on St. Alexander of Constantinople's Day, 30 August 1834.
