In 1866 Tiffany & Co. provided 20,000 medals to the State of Ohio, to recognize the "Veteran Volunteers" who re-enlisted after having completed their tour of duty during the American Civil War. The 5th Regiment, Ohio Infantry mustered in on 20 April, 1861 at Camp Harrison, near Cincinnati, Ohio. They were mustered out July 26, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. The Regiment comprised 10 Companies, and many of the recruits came from Cuyahoga County. The 5th Ohio participated in 28 battles over the course of the conflict, including those of Antietam and Gettysburg, and sustained a loss of more than 500 men killed, wounded or captured.
