The Bridge of Dunkeld was designed by Thomas Telford. John Murray, 4th Duke of Atholl (1755-1830) financed the majority of the construction costs with the government providing a grant of £7,500. There was a toll-house at the southern abutment, but the citizens of Dunkeld resented paying and their objections led to riots in 1868. The toll was finally abolished in 1879.
