John Charles Burrow was a pioneer of early flash photography and its use underground photographing the tin mines of Cornwall. It was for this work that he was appointed "Photographer to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales". Burrow, who lived in Trelowarren Street, Camborne, was commissioned by the owners of four of Cornwall's deepest mines, Dolcoath, East Pool, Cook's Kitchen and Blue Hills, to capture life underground and to showcase their technology. Many of the most successful images are to be found in "Mongst Mines and Miners or Underground Scenes by Flashlight" (Camborne Printing and Stationery Co. and Waterlow and Sons, London, 1893).
