Medals by Subject, Regimental medals: Northumberland Fusiliers, Lord Grey's Challenge Shield [for rifle shooting], cast silver medal, 1902, signed RH and TH Co, St. George on horseback, slays the dragon, QVO FATA VOCANT, rev. named in centre, "PTE J. Dryden C. Colst. V.B. N.F. Winning Team 1902", 51.5mm, in fitted case, a wonderful 'New Sculpture' design and lettering, much as made, good very fine, very rare
The medal and shield were the innovation of Albert Henry George, 4th Earl Grey (1851-1917), politician who, in 1899, became lord lieutenant of Northumberland and later served as Governor General of Canada (1904-1911). The cataloguers have been unable to identify the medallist. The answer may be found in the Estate records of the Earls Grey and Lords Howick held by the University of Durham, which includes "Conditions for competition for 4th Earl Grey's challenge shield for rifle shooting".
