The young Viscount Fordwich and his tutor, Jean Chastellain, arrived in Florence in 1759 and there he remained. In December the same year, he was elected MP for Hertford, but never fulfilled the post. He inherited his earldom in 1764 and, in 1775, married the sixteen-year-old Hannah Anne Gore, daughter of Charles Gore. However, he is remembered as an art collector and connoisseur; a member of the Accademia delle arti del Disegno and elected to the Accademia della Crusca. He patronised well-known artists and scientists including Zoffany and Alessandro Volta.
The medal's reverse is first found on a medal of Francesco Maria Niccolo Gabburri (1675-1742) (V & T 369).
