British Coins, Elizabeth II (1952-present), sovereign, 1980, in set entitled 'Behind Enemy Lines' alongside replica dress miniature medals (2): the Gulf War medal; Kuwait Liberation Medal, in case with certificates, the sovereign good very fine, wiped (3)
The certificate states that the sovereign is one of the 16,289 sovereigns taken with military personnel to the Gulf War, should they have been needed as bargaining power if they had become stranded in unfriendly territory. Many coins were used in the war, mainly by shot down Royal Air Force crews, but personnel who returned with the coins were asked to send them to the Ministry of Defence – of which this is one.
