The Milton Collection, British West Africa, George V, Royal Mint Specimen Set of the four AR coins, 1913, designed by Bertram MacKennal, comprising two-shillings, shilling, sixpence and threepence, issued by the West African Currency Board (Vice p. 172; KM SS2), only 200 sets issued, extremely rare, with an even matching tone, individually certified and graded by NGC, two shillings and shilling as Mint State 66, Sixpence as Mint State 67 and Threepence as Mint State 68 (4)
Bought from David Lawrence Rare Coins, Virginia Beach, USA, October 2006.
The set is lacking its case of issue. Neither Pridmore nor Ford had a set. That in the Vice Collection (lot 37095) had the case, though the coins did not quite match these for grade. The Royal Mint struck 14 double sets in proof condition, for presentation to the King, the Secretary of State for the Colonies and foreign dignitaries. The 200 single sets such as this were sold for 3s/9d, plus the case and insured postage – 7s/6d in all! They contained "specially selected uncirculated pieces" [Vice].
(500-750 GBP)
