The Milton Collection, British West Africa, George V, tin-brass shilling, 1920 G, the manufactory of J. R. Gaunt & Son Ltd., Birmingham, crowned bust left, rev. palm dividing date, value below (FT 51; KM 12a), extremely rare in this condition, certified and graded by NGC as Mint State 66
Ex David Vice, Heritage Auction 3039 (10 January 2016), lot 37016,; ex R. J. Ford Collection, part II (Spink Auction 88, 14 October 1991), lot 23, where described as "Lustrous mint state, with original colour, extremely rare".
The Heritage catalogue quotes "From the collector" and it seems right to repeat it here: "Believed to be finest known example. Ex R.J. Ford collection. Extremely rare." Indeed, the collector seems to be absolutely correct that this is the finest known example; comparing it to the Diana and Arielle Collection examples, this is far and away the superior piece. Though the standard numismatic lexicon does not possess monikers to qualitatively describe the surface of this coin because of its somewhat unusual composition (such as "Red" to describe a copper coin), it certainly seems to have wholly original surfaces, and probably appears more or less the same as it did the day it left the mint. Wonderfully lustrous and truly stunning; it would without a doubt be one of the centrepieces of any British West Africa collection.
