During the battle of the Meuse-Argonne, Neuvilly-en-Argonne was captured by the 17th Division temporarily on 10 October 1918, then taken finally on 17 October.
DCM, London Gazette, Supplement, 18 February, 1919; Supplement, 9 January, 1920; Edinburgh Gazette, Supplement, 12 January, 1920:
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on 11th - 12th October, 1918, at Neuvilly. He was one of a small party of sappers carrying forward an improvised footbridge. He jumped into the water and held up the bridge until the attacking troops crossed, in spite of machine-gun fire and the fact that the enemy were throwing grenades at him from a camouflaged trench.
