British Coins, Coenwulf, King of Mercia, (796-821) penny, moneyer Sigebeorht, Group III, tribach design with circle at centre, trefoil, pellets and v with angles, C(O)ENVLF RE, rev. tribach of two limbs, pellets in angles, SIGEBERHT (last letters ligate), (cf. N 347-51) about very fine
This is an important new type for Coenwulf with a tribach type on both obverse and reverse. The tribach is decorated with ornaments which is known for Coenwulf but there is no tribach type each side known. The use of the tribach type each side seems unique to the archiepiscopal coinage. This coin could be a mule with one of these types, but the use of the tribach with a circular centre, otherwise unknown, seems to point to this being a substantive new type.
