A protracted war between the Holy Roman Empire and Johann Zápolya finally concluded in 1539 with the Treaty of Nagyvarad, in which the childless Johann named Ferdinand I as his heir. However, the subsequent year Johann and his wife Isabella had a son, Johann Sigismund, who became king at only one week old after his father's unexpected death.
