Hupeh. Kuang-hsü "Small Characters" Tael Year 30 (1904) AU58 NGC, Wuchang mint, KM-Y128.2, L&M-180, Kann-933, WS-0878, Wenchao-583. Small characters variety. A historically interesting type, which was introduced as part of a projected coinage reform based on the traditional system of Chinese weights, rather than the relatively recently introduced decimalized Dollar system. Crafted to bold precision, the devices sharply contoured and standing in stark relief against the surrounding features, not a trace of weakness visible to the strike. Hard silver luster is evident throughout, surviving brief circulation, with a soft veil of silvery tone transitioning to colorful, glowing iridescence at the outer registers resulting in an exceptional eye appeal that matches a wholly laudable preservation for the type.
