Kiangnan. Kuang-hsü Dollar ND (1897) UNC Details (Environmental Damage) PCGS, Nanking mint, KM-Y145.1, L&M-210A, Kann-66d, WS-0786, Wenchao-640 (rarity 2 stars). Herringbone (Ornamental) edge. Variety with 2 strokes in sheng ("province"), and crossbars on A's in KIANGNAN barely visible. With ink chopmark on obverse (reverse as holdered). Evincing the highest degree of quality in every sense of the word, with a rich pastel tone overlying surfaces expressing marked and persistent luster. PCGS's certification policy stipulates that chopmarked coins cannot receive a straight grade, accounting for the assigned Details notation, though we feel that the quality of the specimen is otherwise very likely near to gem, if not so. Virtually no disturbances may be traced over the fields, with close inspection yielding only heightened appreciation for the balanced patina and exceptional aesthetic appeal. This example may rightfully be considered the "brother", or companion, to the previous example of the type that we sold in our July Hong Kong sale (July 2020, Lot 30108), with both coins hailing from the same collection, similarly ink chopmarked, and very nearly identical in appearance. As such, we consider this piece the equal of the former, which is to say that it comes with our highest recommendation.
