Kuang Mu gold 10 Won Year 10 (1906) AU58 NGC, Osaka mint, KM1130, J&V-AD5 (R), CKCB-28.2. Mintage: 5,000. A very fresh representative of this iconic Korean type, preserving a hearty degree of mint luster that continues to whirl around the fields, suggesting a level of preservation very near to Mint State status, and bounded only by minor handling in the fields. Perhaps one of the most popular issues of the nation despite its issuance during the period of Japanese occupation (the denomination featuring on the cover of The Catalog of Korean Coins and Banknotes, 2013 edition), the 10 Won was produced for only two years--the 1909 being virtually unattainable, and most of the mintage of this date being retained by the Bank of Japan to back gold notes and then melted later on. As such surviving specimens in any sort of appreciable quality are very rare and command aggressive prices amongst collectors.
