Johannes, protospatharios (undertype) and Georgios (overtype), 11th century. Seal (Lead, 24 mm, 8.99 g, 12 h). [MHP] - ΘV Nimbate Mother of God, either of the "Nikopoios" type, holding a medallion of Christ or the "Minimalorantengestus" type, with her hands raised in prayer before her. Rev. +ΘKE / ROHΘЄI / IⲰ ACΠAΘ ... in three lines, the remainder of the legend obscured. Overstruck twice with the same boulloterion: on the obverse the overtype has an image of the Mother of God "Episkepsis", with her hands raised in prayer and a medallion of Christ before, and sigla M-Θ; the reverse legend reads ΓЄⲰPΓ, / CKЄΠ, MЄ / TON CON / OIKЄ ("May you protect your servant Georgios"). Apparently unpublished. A dramatic overstrike, rare in Byzantine sigillography, and therefore of great interest. Edge cracks, otherwise, good very fine.
