ISLAMIC, Time of the Rashidun. Pseudo-Byzantine types. Fals (Bronze, 27 mm, 5.57 g, 7 h), presumably imitating the obverse of a follis of Constans II and the reverse of Heraclian issues, uncertain mint, circa AH 29 = AD 650 or earlier. Crowned and draped beardless bust facing, holding globus cruciger in his right hand; around, traces of legend. Rev. Large M; around, blundered legend; in exergue, blundered KINO. Goodwin&Gyselen, p. 48, Class G. H. Pottier, I. Schulze and W. Schulze: 'Pseudo-Byzantine Coinage...', in: RBN 154 (2008), Class III, -. Apparently unpublished. Flan crack, otherwise, about very fine.

This particularly crude imitation shares the obverse die with lot 1780 above, but it combines it with a hitherto unpublished reverse type, which is likely based on two Heraclian prototypes from Cyprus and Nicomedia. We kindly thank T. Goodwin for his valuable contributions to the discussion of this issue.
