PHRYGIA. Kibyra (?). Late 2nd-1st century BC. AE (Bronze, 12 mm, 1.81 g). Star of sixteen rays. Rev. KI. Savoca E-Auction 79 (2020), 299. Cf. SNG von Aulock 3699 (a hemiobol with a star of eight rays). Extremely rare. Light die break on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.
The attribution of this small coin to Kibyra is based on the two letters on the reverse as well as to its similarity to SNG von Aulock 3699, a hemiobol that was purchased by von Aulock in a group of coins from Kibyra. It has to be noted that our example differs from the von Aulock example in showing a star with sixteen rays instead of eight on the obverse, but the two coins certainly belong together, even if their attribution to Kibyra remains tentative.
