INDIA, Post-Mauryan (Malwa). Vidishas (Vidisas). Bhanumitra. 1/2 Unit (Bronze, 14 mm, 3.17 g), circa 1st century BC. 'RANO BHANUMITASA' (in Brahmi) Figure standing facing, holding spear in his right hand and kamandalu in his left. Rev. Blank. Pieper -. An apparently unpublished type for the ruler. Very fine.

From a collection of coins from Central Asia.

Bhanumitra was an ephemeral ruler of Malwa, who emerged after the collapse of the Mauryan empire. Pieper lists a coin from this ruler with a tree in railing instead of with a human figure in the center of the obverse (cf. Pieper 414).
