Kingdom of Lydia, Alyattes EL 1/96 Stater. Circa 610-560 BC. Lion's paw / Incuse punch. GRPC Lydia G45; Karwiese Series I, Group 1 (Ephesos); Weidauer -; SNG Kayhan -; SNG von Aulock 1805 (Uncertain Ionia, shell); Elektron II 70 (Uncertain Ionia). 0.13g, 4mm.

Extremely Fine. Very Rare.

From the Marnix Collection;
Acquired from D. F. Grotjohann, 2011.

At 4mm diameter and with a weight of 0.13g, this is one of the smallest coins ever issued. Assuming, as is commonly supposed, that one trite (1/3 stater) represented a month's pay for a soldier, this would mean that a 1/96 stater like this would have had a purchasing power roughly equivalent to £550 (= $730), still far too high to have been useful in day to day life.
