Part of Aurelian's reform was the issue of a base silver coin about half the weight of the antoninianus, also containing about 5% silver. This was almost certainly designated a denarius, a successor to the venerable coin of the Roman Republic and early Roman Empire. A large number of these pieces were struck for his wife, Ulpia Severina, but the denomination was only sparingly struck by subsequent rulers up to the Tetrarchy.
