CALABRIA, Tarentum. Circa 280-272 BC. AR Nomos (19mm, 6.52 g, 6h). Youth on horseback right, crowning self with wreath in right hand, holding reins in left; IΩ to upper left; IAΛO and Ionic capital below horse / Phalanthos, holding aphlaston in right hand and distaff in left; TAPA[Σ] below, ANΘ to upper right. Vlasto 803; HN Italy 1014. Deep iridescent tone, minor marks on obverse. Good VF.

John Spring (Ancient Coin Auction Catalogs 1880-1980) notes: "Erich Cahn tells us that at the time of the Nazi persecution of 1934 'Heinrich Hirsch, the senior partner of Otto Helbing Nachf., emigrated to Switzerland. His son Gerhard [born 1903] moved 'in the wrong direction' to Prague, where he held a small number of sales, but in 1939 that business was obliged to close after the German annexation of Czechoslovakia. Gerhard Hirsch was interned at Theresienstadt and Auschwitz concentration camps, but he survived in relatively good health and returned to Munich in 1945, and after a period of working in the Justice Ministry he opened a new coin business there in 1953.' This continues as Gerard Hirsch Nachf. to the present day..."
