George VI (1936-52), Gold Proof Five Pounds, 1937. Bare head left, initials HP below neck for Humphrey Paget, GEORGIVS VI D:G: BR: OMN: REX F: D: IND: IMP: rev. St George and dragon right, date in exergue, B.P. to upper right of exergue, edge plain (L&S 1; WR 435; S.4074). A few light hairlines, nick under chin in field, some tone spots on reverse, otherwise as struck, has been slabbed and graded by NGC as PF64. Estimated Value $7,500
NGC Certification 5880635-022. Mintage 5,501. The Latin legend translates as "George the Sixth by the grace of God, King of all the Britons, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India." These plain edge Proof gold Five Pounds were produced to celebrate the Coronation of King George VI on the 12th May 1937 as part of gold Proof sets, with a mintage of 5,501 pieces, they were technically patterns as they did not have a milled edge like earlier gold Five Pounds of other reigns. The legends translate as "George the Sixth by the grace of God, King of all the Britains, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India."
