AUSTRIA. Salzburg. Gold Medallic 24 Ducats, ND (1727-44). Leopold Anton Eleutherius von Firmian. NGC AU-55.
Fr-Unlisted; KM-Unlisted. Diameter: 48.5mm; Weight: 87.2 gms. By G. R. Donner & P. H. Mueller. Obverse: LEOPOLDVS D G ARCH & PR SALISB S S A L G PRIMAS, bust right, wearing stole; Reverse: IN MANV DOMINI SORS MEA (my fate rests in the Hand of the Lord), veduta of Salzburg. Issued during the reign of the Prince-Archbishop Leopold Anton Eleutherius von Firmian, this EXCESSIVELY RARE and likely UNIQUE gold medal--a massive piece at the weight of 24 ducats--stands unrivaled in terms of rarity, and the same can easily be said regarding overall quality and craftsmanship. Only exhibiting a slight degree of friction marks on the surfaces, the high points are as bold and defined as ever, and a good deal of lustrous brilliance remains virtually throughout. The fur pattern on the stole of the prince-archbishop is exceedingly fine, and the amount of care and detail given to the cityscape on the reverse is rather majestic. Countless church steeples can be deciphered, as well as the numerous rolling hills both in the foreground and the background. Truly, an iconic piece that will be of heightened interest to the advanced collector of the issues from Salzburg, city view types, or impressive gold medals in general.
