GERMANY. Kempten. Gold 2 Kreuzer of 1/2 Ducat Weight, 1624. NGC AU-58.
cf. KM-71 (for regular issue in silver). Weight: 1.57 gms. Off-metal striking. Struck in the name of Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II. Obverse: FERDINANDVS II ROM IM S AV, three coats-of-arms around in triangular fashion and with lis between; Reverse: MON NO CI CAMPIDO, imperial double eagle facing, with wings spread, crown above, and orb on breast. An incredibly unusual and seemingly UNIQUE off-metal striking, this would-be silver kreuzer is instead faithfully reproduced on a gold flan at the weight of a 1/2 Ducat. Adding further to the allure is the pedigree dating back over a century, as well as choice surface quality and brilliance. In the opinion of this cataloger, the grading level assigned would appear to be a bit conservative, though its singular nature relegates that aspect to near-frivolity.
