COSTA RICA. Central American Republic. 8 Escudos, 1828-CR F. San Jose Mint. NGC MS-63+.
KM-17; Onza-1746. Mintage: 5,302. A classic Latin American issue that captures the culture of the region, depicting a radiant, personified sun over a mountain range in the obverse center and a ceiba tree, which is native to the tropical region, on the reverse. Stunningly preserved, this example may rank as the finest survivor from this modest mint in San Jose. It is both well struck, which is often not the case, and with limited past handling, which allows the fields to emit gratifying radiance. As the first date of the short-lived type, it carries elevated historical significance, as well. This example certainly appears to exceed other "famous" examples sold over the past decades, with the Mortimer Hammel piece and the Millennia Collection specimens both grading MS-62 at NGC. More recently, the Lissner example, which brought $42,500 hammer in that 2014 sale, was graded AU-58 by NGC. That said, as the single finest graded example of not only the date, but all Costa Rican dates, the importance of this coin cannot be underestimated.
