ECUADOR. 8 Escudos, 1840-QUITO MV. Quito Mint. PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield.
KM-23.1; Onza-1758. Variety with triple colon (⫶) after denomination. One of only two Mint State example certified for the date, with incredibly intricate detail remaining in the designs, few marks and only a few trivial hairlines in the fields and alluring copper-orange tone at the edges that serves to intensify the appearance. VERY RARE, both in overall quality, and as a variety, with this being only the second example we've found with the triple colon legend after the denomination. Interestingly, the reverse die used on this piece is also significantly different than those usually seen, with finer texture in the mountains, but less overall contour. Perfect for the elite type collector or specialist in the series, as either way, this coin would be essentially impossible to replace!
