ECUADOR. 8 Escudos, 1840-QUITO MV. Quito Mint. NGC AU-58.
KM-23.1; Onza-1758 ("rara"). Variety with colon (:) after denomination. Struck with different obverse and reverse dies than the previous lot, showing a colon after the denomination on the obverse and mountains with significantly more contour on the reverse. Incredibly choice for the grade, this piece maintains virtually full brilliance in the fields with no interfering marks. The designs also exceed one's expectations as they are incredibly sharp, which in and of itself is a RARITY. Despite the AU designation, evidence of circulation is limited, with virtually no contrast appearing over the highpoints of the designs. A great coin throughout, and without question, an amazing occurrence to have not one, but two examples of this elusive type in superb quality in the same sale.
