COSTA RICA. 50 Centavos, 1880-GW. San Jose Mint. NGC MS-65.
KM-124. The first year for this five year issue that ran through 1890. Like the types before them, Costa Rican coins from the 1880s saw extensive circulation, with most survivors today reflecting this extensive usage. An EXTREMELY RARE exception, not only was this coin saved, but it borders on pristine. Well-struck throughout, it displays sparkling luster in the fields with that faintest traces of tone that deepen slightly along portions of the legends. No marks are seen. As the only Mint State example certified for the date (by either NGC or PCGS), it's survival is certainly miraculous. While valuing such an item is admittedly difficult, the most recent sale at auction of this date may add a touch of perspective; in 2017, an NGC-grade AU-50 brought $720. While the value of this Gem remains uncertain, what is all but certain is that one's opportunity to acquire it may be -- like the coin is in this condition -- unique.
