MEXICO. "Royal" Presentation 8 Escudos, 1711-MXo J. Mexico City Mint; Assayer J (Jose E. de Leon). Philip V. NGC MS-66.

The single second finest certified of the date on the NGC population report of only three graded, none at PCGS. Obverse: Crowned coat of arms of Spain, consisting of Castile and Leon, Catalonia - Aragon, Sicily, Austria, Burgundy, Brabant, Flanders, Tyrol and the Bourbon Fleurs-de-lis, denomination "VII" to right and mintmark and assayers letter "oxMJ" left; legend around; Reverse: Stylized bar-tipped cross with fleurs-de-lis in quarters all within shaped border within beaded border, legend around. An EXTREMELY RARE, highly desirable and truly impressive "royal" presentation issue exhibiting a complete bold strike perfectly centered on a broad round flan. The devices are crisp and well defined showing slight evidence of being struck multiple times indicative of specially prepared issues of this nature, on a specially prepared hand cast round planchet. The decisive legends leave little to the imagination exhibiting somewhat high relief letters and floret stops such as the full king's name, ordinal and date. This mesmerizing specimen boasts powerful bright yellow-gold coloration that immediately catches the attention of any who beholds its artistic beauty. Great care and consideration was taken into account when engraving these masterful dies displaying minor areas of touch up work after usage to keep the devices sharp. Interesting to note that this particular Royal issue shares the same cross side die as the 1713 8 Escudos also in this sale indicating that at the very minimum that the reverse dies were utilized for regular production after the fact. This is not surprising since it is known that the 1714 Royal dies were also utilized for regular production coinage. An intriguing series deserving of further in-depth scholarly research to confirm that other dates within the 1711-13 range can be linked to each other.
