BRAZIL. Brazil - Brazil. 960 Reis, 1827-R. Rio de Janeiro Mint. Pedro I. NGC AU-53.
KM-368.1; LDMB-P508b; Levy-RCM.11. Mintage: 18,000. A VERY RARE semi-key date from the series for this mint that is significantly more interesting than normally encountered. Struck over a previously countermarked Spanish colonial bust 8 Reales of indeterminate date or mint, but is probably that of Charles IIII (IV) baring a bi-facial Minas Gerais 960 Reis countermark issued by decree of 1 September 1808 until 4 April 1810. This pleasingly toned survivor exhibits a good deal of lustrous brilliance remaining in the protected areas with an entirely wholesome overall appearance and plenty of detail of the countermark underneath the overstrike from nearly 20 years prior. This date seldom appears in the marketplace and is especially interesting being revalidated twice certain to catch the attention of serious collectors of Brazilian, World Crown and countermark collectors.

According to the numismatic author David Andre Levy who painstakingly compiled the data for his standard reference The 960 Reis Overstrikes, about 50% of this low mintage date was overstruck on Minas Gerais countermarked hosts.

Estimate: $1000.00- $1500.00
