PHILIPPINES. Philippines - Peru. 8 Reales, ND (1832-34). Ferdinand VII. PCGS Genuine--Damage, VF Details Gold Shield; Countermark: XF Details.
KM-80; Basso-41; Gil Crown variety-5-4-1-C. Type V Countermark, crowned F.7.0 within circle. Issued by decree of 2 October 1832, commencing 5 October 1832 until 20 December 1834. Countermark applied to the obverse of an 1823-LIMA JP Peru "Libre" 8 Reales, short tassels above date variety. A SCARCE and highly desirable host type with a slightly better date than the year of issue. Though the countermark is well applied the center of the punch is showing the beginning signs of failure with a slight bulge in the center adding an interesting characteristic. Evidence of being cleaning long ago with light directional hairlines visible in the light when rotating the coin now subdued by attractive rich slate gray patina. Though the PCGS insert has given a designation of "Damage" this cataloger is having a difficult time locating said damage, a more suitable designation might be "Cleaned" or something to that effect. Despite its shortcomings a handsome example of the type sure to be a welcome addition to the next collection it enters.
Estimate: $900.00- $1200.00
